What era do you model in, plan to model in, or would like to model in when you have the chance to build a layout?
In N scale, I model the Southern Pacific in the fall of 1960 becuase SP is one of my favorite fallen flags. It also gives me an excuse to play around with second and third generation geeps.
In O gauge, I am a pure toy train operator and refuse to recognize a defined era. I just run what ever I feel like running that particular day.
In G scale (1:29/1:32), I model predominately modern UP with BNSF trackage rights. I do have some steam equipment for excursion run.

I model the 1950's in HO, but I would love to do the 1880's in G scale. I have seem some amazing locomotives from that era at train shows.

Funny you should ask. I've modeled 1938-39 for a long time now on the N scale Autumns Ridge Railway & Navigation Co., but I decided just recently to backdate to 1928. This allows me to use Archbar trucks and sets the scenery in the heyday of the roaring 20's.

Make sure in that era to thrown in a few horses for transportation. They used horses for farming even into the 1950's because tractors were expensive. Just a thought, since vehicles are what really define an era.

Oelwein, Iowa and surrounding area. 1981. Why '81? It was the final year that all 4 x- CGW lines out of Oelwein were still operating. Actually, one of them closed on November 6, 1981.

Well I just found out that I can't run GP9-s and steam engines on my current HO layout. It turns out that on the Idaho division steam was gone by '54 the same year the GP-9 came out. Can you tell a GP-9 from a GP-7, if so what's the difference?
