Just want to take this oportunity to introduce myself here. My name's Lorne and I live in Alberta, Canada. Fairly new to the model train hobby. I've been really interested in it for years but have never had the chance to build a layout yet. As of yet I either don't have the time or don't have the money (funny how one of those reasons ruesults in the other...you either have lots of time and no money, or lots of money but no time). Right at the m oment I live in a small three bedroom townhouse and haven't got access to a spare room but I try to do a bit of modelling whenever I can.
Funny how you guys are talking about city names. I was born and raised in Vancouver BC, Canada and there's another city of the same name just to the. Now I live in Grande Prairie Alberta, Canada.....as I understand it, there's one of those in Texas, as well. What's really funny is, Alberta is the Canadian equivilant to Texas. We have the same terrain...even export oil. Oil up here has bot to be Alberta's biggest exports, then logging.
Well, anyway....just wanted to say hi.

Thanks for the welcome. My favorite rail line is actually two of them. I like CN and CP. My dream layout is a prototype layout of the Royal Hudson from N. Vancouver to Squamish. I took that trip back in '99 and loved it.
I love the steam era and plan on making my first layout as close as I can to the first CP train to roll through Vancouver. Another idea I'ver been rolling through my head is a sectional layout of a CN yard from around the mid-late 1920's. Right now I'm just doing research until I can get more room to build the layout. Always on the lookout for ideas and info.

First CP train to roll through Vancouver, eh? Kind of boring....lol. First passenger train might be a bit more interesting! Of those three, I'd definitely vote for the North Van to Squamish route - But backdate it to the eighties! Then you can have MLWs and SD40-2s reigning supreme! Well, good to see another Canadian here, especially Albertan! Although I'd kind of argue about the same terrain point earlier...they don't have snow-capped and looming grey Rockies on the west side, and we haven't had seaside beaches for a few million years. P.S. - I forgot to note that I call Calgary home. Not quite as glamourous as the north end, I know...

Not much in the way of rolling hills either. Kinda flat and barren. Glamorous? Hardly. When I finally get that Royal Hudson layout started I'll be using a 4-6-4 Hudson at least. There'll be more trains, of course, but the 4-6-4 will be the main one. Good to see another Albertan in here. As far as being from Calgary....I won't hold that against ya... . Nothing really wrong with Calgary. Better than Edmonton. I think they should make Calgary the capital. What do you think, Trainboy?

Matt, as per the Rockies go, what particular mountain range do you think that El Paso, Texas is located just outside of (if not just inside of)??

Well, didn't I say something about snow-capped and looming grey? Lorne, I agree! Edmonton's boring, and all they have going for them is the mall. Besides, we have a better railroad here! Does the ex-NAR line go through GP?

The line up here was just a shortline called Savage, I think it was privately owned. It was bought out by CN last year. I'm fairly new to the railroading thing here, is it safe to asume NAR stands for Northern Alberta Railroad? Might be the same line Savage ran on....not 100% sure, though.

I've got a subscription to MR but at the moment I'm looking for something that is more focused on On30. Unfortunately, I can't afford to keep MR and get another one. Mr doesn't have very many topics on narrow guage for some reason. I've had a subscription to it for three years and I can count on one hand how many narrow guage topics there were. Even fewer On30 stuff.
