While I like them all, and they all have their good points, I'm going to have to go with the northern because of it's added flexability due to it's size.
It was able to be used in more places and for more things because it wasn't as large and heavy as the others.
But I have to admit, the others are more impressive when you're standing next to them!

I have to agree with the above about the Northern. Though I felt very small and insignificant when I stood next to a Big Boy (UP 4005) in Colorado a few years ago.

I like the Challenger best.I really enjoy the sight of that huge articulated on the point of a long passenger train! ;D After the 1992 NRHS convention in San Jose,I rode behind the Challenger from San Jose(actually Fremont) and Sacramento on a 17 car train with NO( ;D) diesels! AWESOME!

To be in a railcar just behind a steamer is something you have to experience to believe. The sway caused by the surge of the drivers is almost like therocking of a boat. You can't get that behind a diesel. Being behind a shay is a different experience altogher. You don't get the rocking motion but a gentle jerking motion. It's been said that if the steam locomotive is the ultimate mechanical device then the shay is the ultimate steam locomotive.

I personally have seen the 4-6-6-4 steam engine around the states. It seems to me that that engine is a good steamer.
