Texas Helps Union Pacific, BNSF Buy Low-Emission Locomotives
Texas is encouraging efforts by Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway to reduce emissions by giving the railroads $134.2 million to buy locomotives. The grant money represents more than a fourth of the state’s budget this year for anti-pollution programs.
Union Pacific receives $94.6 million, while BNSF gets $39.6 million, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Other railroads will split the rest of the state’s $155.3 million in grant money for locomotives this year.
