It's come to my attention that KCS is now running crewless trains. It started on the Meridian speed way. These trains are tracked by normal GPS and CTC systems but there is not an operator on board any of these trains. A system much like DCC is being used through the track and signals sent though the rail's are what control the trains. Now they have to remove all grade crossing's and either make them go over or under the track sense no one is there to control the train therefore no accidents can happen except out of stupidity of playing on the tracks. Does anyone else have any information on this?

KCS is doing this because of a shortage of trained engineers. They took on such much when they picked up TFM and the others and didn't put on additional manpower.

They are, but there's a shortage of trained people. They have to train new ones now, and that takes time.

Its not so much remote control, remote control itself is very safe, and I can see how KCS may be using that type of technology on its railroad. The Indiana Railroad gives the dispatcher ways to stop the tran and the crewman uses tilt sensitive radios.

I dont care, I openly detest remote control. You might think it is safe but that is you. If I trip and cant get up in front of a train moving slow and I am by myself and the train is remote control that is my leg(s), arm(s), or life. If there is a crew aboard, then I would have a (better) chance.

I recall an article in a TRAINS magizine talking about "unmanned" trains. I dont think it talked about a specific road but it was the cover story.

I hate the idea of remote control with a firey passion when it involes hundred + ton machines, that can easily kill someone.

From what I understand, it's what the railroads are coming to. Sometime in the future, the trains in your neck of the woods won't have a soul on board. Everything will be controlled by somebody watching a monitor and seeing what's on the track ahead on a closed-circuit satellite hookup.
