The reason I prefer 38 series EMDs is they aren't turbocharged (roots blower instead). The "whistle/whine" of the trubo on a GP/SD40(-2) drouns out the pleasant chugging of the prime mover.

I like the whine, it makes me think of my truck.

Each to his own. I just prefer the chugging of the non-turbo units, especially when lugging hard at low speeds (N2-N3)

Y'all are aware that the turbocharger can be disengaged?

I don't know precisely how, but I know that it can be. I listen to the local yard traffic. One day, they had a locomotive that was having problems with a bearing in it's turbocharger. The crew was instructed to disengage the turbocharger and run without it.

That is cool. I didn't know that was possible.

Yeah. Basically (and I'm not 100% sure this applies to an EMD turbo) there are vanes that can direct the exhaust gas thru the turbo or around it. On newer engines, this is electric and computer comtrolled to get the best performance. If yuo dont have the right turbo setting you'll get poor fuel economy, but with the right setting you're fuel economy is increased.

My favorate shortline is the Texas Pacifico. www.txpf.comLeased to FerroMex from TxDOT this line is literally bringing itself back from the dead. IOriginally built as the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient, it laster became a part of Santa Fe. ATSF gave it up around 1990 or so, and then South Orient Railway took it over. South Orient wanted to abandon the line when the State of Texas stepped in, and made arangement to lease the line to FerroMex. It has a long way to go to get its entire ROW resoted properly, but is is getting better and better with each passing month.
