Recently we saw some shots here of a huge steel industry layout, and it got me to wondering....would I be happy with a single industry switching layout, whether steel mill, harbor, grain elevator or downtown industrial switching (a la Bill Denton).
I loved the look of that steel mill, and there are a variety of cars (which might not be the case at a grain elevator) to switch early and often, which is the essence of ops.
So, it would be fun to build if you liked structures, and could be fun to op, except that there is no mainline and little chance for variety.
I conclude I couldn't be happy with that (although certainly better than the alternative of no layout).
Would you build a single industry layout for yourself?

I have been tempted once or twice to model the Houston shipping ports in N scale.

You remind me of a guy I know who's modeling the old State Belt Railroad, which ran along the San Francisco waterfront. Something like that can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make it.

That would certainly be unique. I know I would not be happy without a mainline of some sort.

All distilleries have a number of Federal agents and all valves are padlocked with Govt sealed locks, and guess who has the keys and replacement seals. CHUCK

Want to model a single industry? Try a modern automotive asssembly plant. A wide variety of cars needed, plus plenty of switching action, if you're a switching junky, like me!
Cars required :- 86' high cube boxcars- 4 door + 8 door 60' autoparts boxcars 55' centre flow hopper cars 89' autorack cars 59' boxcars 100 ton steel coil cars Various tank cars Gondola cars
Cheers, Simon
