Talk about bad luck.

We don't get much espee power in my neck o' the woods. (unless you go to the UP yard about 40 miles away) Last power was in 2001-02 when UP still ran the Oelwien branch. They ran the longest train Oelwein had seen in many years- a 75 car train of covered hoppers pulled by a UP GP38 and espee GP38. Many feared the train would derail, as the track was in bad shape and speed limit was 10 MPH, but it stayed on the tracks. Since then, IANR has run quite a few trains of 100+ cars out of Oelwein, back when the Oelwein turn ran once a week. Now that it runs several times a week, trains are shorter. I kinda miss the "good old days".

Not really. Because now there is a DAILY train on the line, instead of WEEKLY.

Eh, I guess some change is an improvement.

It's better because now the train runs on Saturdays and Sundays, wheras before it ran only on Thuirsday, and would've been nearly impossible for me to railfan.

I have actually never seen a unit with this paint sceme on the prototype. That won't keep me from running them though . . . Strange, to think that someone's never seen those units . . . until, of course, I realize how long ago the change in paintschemes was made (beginning in 1958) . . . which leads me to realize (again) how long I've been around . . . oh, gee, but I'm sure glad we had this conversation! Regards, Paul

Well regardless, they were some sharp lookin units.

They really were sharp-looking. I think my favorites were the F's. Most of the units I saw in that scheme, though, were the geeps and Trainmasters, growing up in San Francisco. Never did take a liking to the "bloody nose" that replaced all those older liveries. Seems to me to have signalled the beginning of the decline for Espee.

I model the UP in N scale.

I'm kind of at a crossroads with my modeling (also N Scale) at the moment: Due to a recent move, my layout space took a drastic hit. (In the end, the trade-off will be worth it . . . I keep telling myself.) So for right now, I'm having to look at some sort of urban switching layout split between mid50s-era Espee and Santa Fe power.

I model the UP in N scale. I meant to say SP.

I model the UP in N scale. I meant to say SP. That UP did have me wondering . . .
