I have an out and back type switching layout. I'd like to have a center cab switcher so that I don't have the strange look of an engine running backwards on a return trip. I also think that the 44 ton switchers just look cool. Are there any others here that would like to see something like this come from the manufacturers? I've emailed several of them and only got the standard polite we'll take your sugestion into consideration (don't call us-we'll call you-but in the meantime get a life) answer. What is the best way to actually get them to listen to us ie petition, phone calls?

The best way is to go on trains.com and get the attention of the other members that that want the same thing and get as many of them to email the same suggestion as you can. The more modellers request the more likely they are to respond. It is a classic supply and demand scenerio. Once they see that there ARE model railroaders out there want them, they'll deliver.

On one of the other boards there are some people who are making their own switchers, but it looks like a lot of work.

Oh it is. I used to do custom trains year round....now I only do it in the fall and winter.

The sideframes are the toughest part of the 44 tonner project. You start with the Kato critter chassis (part # 11-105 for the slow speed trucks or 11-106 for higher speed trucks or 11-107 for grey trucks) and then you simply build a body from styrene for it (it's a basic three-box design), convert to DCC if you'd like, then fill it with weight. A friend of mine did it. Here's his........ www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoLPy9LHZDg If thats too much you can always go with the Bachmann Plymouth Switcher ( www.nscalesupply.com/BAC/BAC-Loco-Plymouth.html ). They ran in both directions all the time.
