Well in two weeks we are going to Fairbanks and I hope I'll get to take a ride on the train and seeing it firsthand. I'll try to post something about it . I have had some time on local trains PATCO high speed line the old Reading line out of Philadelphia which was 35 years a go. That train was out of the old Reading station ,between the old cars and large open shed it made you feel that you had step back to 1910 or 1920. The cars looked Victorian and had horse hair seats they had oval windows front and back electric overhead lines. It was really a nice ride and a warmer feeling to it then the cold modern PATCO line .

You'll not be sorry. This train still operates as railroads did back in their heyday. It even has flagstops. Be sure to take it all the way to Mt Deali (McKinnley as it's known in the lower 48). Since the train serves as standard transportation for many who live in the bush, you'll have the opportunity to get to actually know how the natives work and live. if you sidetrip to Kodiak be sure to stop by and say hello.

I am jealous of you boys up there in Alaska. Y'all got the best big game hunting in the country, and arguably some of the best in the world.

You will love it! I have ridden the Alaska Railroad, and it is like riding trains before Superliners and Amfleet. The crews are very friendly and you can still ride in the vestibule. The railroad also has a number of ex UP dome cars.

Well we are back and Alaska is wonderful but we did not ride the train but the time and money would not allow it . We are planing to go back in two or three years now that we know more about it and what is there. We stead at cabin called Beaver Creek it was vary nice. We went to Denali, El Dorado Gold mine, and the Museum at the Univerity of Alaska. We also went to the North Pole so my grandson could see Santa. We also took a bus tour to the arctic circle whick took eleven hours long. We also walked around Fairbanks. I hope the next time that we can stay at the same cabin ,rent it for the whole vacation. Then take the train to Denali stay a day there and then take it back to Fairbanks. The people in Fairbank are so nice and helpful. I just think the whole state is one big scenic view and if I were a young man I would move there. When I was a kid the sky in N.J. was almost as blue and you could at night see the Milkie Way. I'm sorry that I could not report about the train I hope to next time.

Don't forget the side trip to Kodiak. I've got some friends that can take you on some bear finding trips. I''ve also got some friends that work on and run some crabbers. I might be able to wrangle a tour of one of their boats.
