UP and BNSF could not have passenger service due to the law. That's the reason Union Pacific couldn't carry passenger on the last run of the challenger it has to be done through another company. And they couldn't afford the insurance. I think Amtrak is a good example of what happens when you put the government in charge.

Thing is, when the post office stopped shipping by rail, the passenger trains were doomed. Many long standing passenger runs ceased within months of postal service being dropped. It's only thanks to the government that you can ride a passenger train at all today other then commuter service or a tourist special. Frankly, with all Amtrak has stacked against it, I'm glad Uncle Sam is helping out. It means I can choose to travel by rail if I want. Without Amtrak, I wouldn't have that option.

I'm not sayig that Amtrak is a shining example of govt. funding, but I am saying that at least they're doing something. They're trying to keep the option of rail travel alive. All others abandon ship a long time ago.

I think Amtrak is a good example of what happens when you put the government in charge. Still better than the alternative...when you leave the railroad in charge. Still, VIA service is fairly good, and that's been wholly government since the late 70s!

Passenger service might work in Europe and elswhere, but it aint worked here since the 60s at the latest. Face it, passenger service in this country is dead.

From a tax dollar prospective....Amtrak needs to go away, but it won't only because it services the highly populated area of the Northeast. U.S. Congress needs to get out of the way and let experienced railroad men run the the thing.

Are they doing the best at it? maybe they could do better, I don't know. But it must be hard running a nationwide RR and not owning any track.
