I am an artist and a landscape painter and I use acrylic paints. I fine they work well with layout work as well . If you would like to try them it may help you to get a spray bottle and a blow dryer. You use the spray bottle filled with water and set it to a fine mist to help to keep the acrylic paint just wet enough so you can blend colors. But to overlay color you use the blow dryer in that way you can work faster. You also may like to try artist gesso for a base coat . It comes in white but you can add color to tint it and then add darker colors to get the look you like. Gesso should work well on plaster. Give it a try but just have fun. I think you will like it.
