Iowa Interstate. I enjoyed watching them run the ex-RI line from Des Moines to Pella. They switched the window factory that I was working at during the eighties. I heard that they have now closed that line. Is that true?

As far as I know, they are still open.

it depends, UP is a mega system, that has the money to run a few unprofitable lines, plus this was back in pre deregulation days and, then, if you manage your buisness badly, you lose money. its that simple BUT, I know for a fact UP doesn't hold on to any lines that are unprofitable. The ex CNW (CGW) Waterloo-Oelwein line was ran by UP for about 6-7 years, they wanted to abandon it. After negotiations, Iowa Northern took it over. When IANR toook over, there was one train a week which ran every Thursday, and the track speed limit was 10MPH. Just recently, with the new ethanol plant, there is a daily train and the trains run 30MPH. The ex-RI line from CR to Manly was the IANRs only line when the railroad was created, and they've made LOTS of $$ from that line, and IANR was very poor to start out with. otto, the IAIS line still runs. Their entire mainline spans from Omaha to Chicago.

I thought that Iowa Interstate was still operational.

mhmm. They're doing pretty good too. I think they just bought a few more SD38-2s from LLPX.
