How can you tell the difference between a shortline and a regional?

The last time I checked, the Alaska Railroad is a class II and is currently owned by the state of Alaska.

If I lived in Alaska I would own the ARR since its the ONLY railroad they have plus its a tourist line as you will see on TV. I would like to see some of their engines down south which they sometimes RAREly do. I wonder if they ever got any CSX's or NS's?

Many times, the railkroads list the companies they got their power from.

So how would I find out if Idaho Northern & Pacific is a shortline, or a regional?

You want to post threads about them on the shortline board?
