My favorite regional is the Ventura County Railroad. It handles a lot of auto racks between the Union Pacific and the port of Hueneme.

I like the Ventura County Railroad. It handles traffic between Port Hueneme and the Union Pacific mainline in Oxnard, California. Lots of autoracks.

My memories focus on the 60's-70's around southeastern Iowa, more specifically the Oskaloosa and surrounding area. If anybody is interested, the RI depot in Oskaloosa has been saved and turned into a railroad themed diner. When the Pella Iowa depot was restored, they asked for volunteers to help, and I got to clean brick and do some painting. The nice thing for a backdrop for this is that the back side (south) of the Pella window company was just across the track from it. Pella window is a featureless two story brick structure. Across the streeton the other side (north) of the building was a gas station turned car lot. I'm not sure what was to the east, but I think it was a sma;; neighborhood grocery store. It was what was on the northeast side across the intersection that was the most interesting. There was a college close by (the track bisected some of the college), and that corner contained a small park. During the warm months the college girls would come out in their bikinies and lay out on the grass. For a short time I lived right next to the park, and I must admit that my wife had no trouble getting me to mow the lawn.
